Interim Charles City Schools Superintendent Not Hired Yet, Could Be Named This Week

It could be later this week that the Charles City School District names an interim superintendent.

Monday, the School Board conducted interviews with three finalists during a special closed session that went almost six hours at Trinity United Methodist Church. When the board returned to open session following the interviews, they voted to have Grundmeyer Leader Services enter into contract negotiations with the finalist referred to as the “first candidate” and  to offer that person the interim superintendent position. However, at their regular meeting Monday night, the School Board set another special meeting for Wednesday at noon to discuss salary and other items associated with the hiring decision.

Roger Wilcox with Grundmeyer, the firm leading the search to replace outgoing Superintendent Mike Fisher, said an announcement could be made as soon as Thursday as to who the district will hire.

Finalists who were to interview Monday included Dr. Anne Lundquist, previously chief officer of academic services for Ankeny Community Schools and currently a classroom teacher at Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Charles City; Dr. Joel Appelgate, currently superintendent of Oberlin Public Schools in northwest Kansas; and Joseph Brown, currently interim superintendent of Clear Creek Amana Schools near Iowa City.

Once hired, the new interim superintendent will begin serving the school district effective July 1st, taking over for Fisher, who is resigning effective June 30th to become the superintendent of schools in his hometown of Oskaloosa.

Grundmeyer helped bring Fisher to Charles City in 2018.
