An Arizona man was arrested this weekend on weapon and drug charges in northeast Iowa.
The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year-old Edgar Chavez of Yuma, AZ, was arrested following a traffic stop on Highway 52 just south of Decorah shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Further investigation led to Chavez’s arrest for operating while under the influence, possession of a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, and possession of controlled substance – marijuana, all serious misdemeanors.
Court records show deputies found a 9mm Glock pistol in the center console of the vehicle. There was no round in the chamber, but the weapon had a loaded magazine. Chavez had a blood alcohol content level of .222, which is more than two times the legal BAC of .08. His vehicle was clocked going 75 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday night, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Marcus Higgins of Fort Atkinson on a warrant for assault on persons in certain occupations, a serious misdemeanor. Court documents state Higgins assaulted a Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s deputy when he tried to leave a medical facility in Mason City against court orders last November.
Just after 7 p.m. Friday night, sheriff’s deputies arrested 42-year-old Jamie Mincks of Calmar on a warrant for third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor.
