Federal Tax Deadline Monday (04.18) Not Friday (04.15)

If you haven’t filed your federal income tax return yet, you don’t have to sweat it, not today (04.15) anyway.

The filing deadline to submit 2021 tax returns or an extension to file and pay tax owed is Monday, April 18th, for most taxpayers. So, you have the weekend to work on taxes, because the 15th falls on a holiday in the District of Columbia, which has the same effect as a federal holiday.

Brenda Schmitt, an ISU Extension Human Services Specialist in family finance, advises watching for little things that could have a big impact your return’s acceptance.

Schmitt says one of the more noticeable changes in taxes this year is with the child tax credits.

IRS spokesman Christopher Miller adds that if you’re not going to meet the April 18th tax filing deadline, you  can request an automatic six-month extension, which would give you until October 17th to file.

The deadline to file your Iowa state income tax return is Monday, May 2nd, since the traditional April 30th deadline falls on a Saturday.
