Oelwein Man Arrested After Standoff with Law Enforcement

An Oelwein man was arrested after a two-hour standoff with law enforcement early Friday morning.

The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office says the eventual arrest of 42-year-old Joshua Smith started with a report at about 5:30 a.m. Friday of an erratic driver on 260th Street, east of Denver. When deputies arrived on scene, the driver, Smith, fled on foot into nearby fields. A search later located Smith hiding inside a truck at a residence in the 2700 block of Navaho Avenue. Authorities say that after nearly a two-hour standoff, chemical agents were deployed and Smith was taken into custody without further incident.

Smith was charged with third-degree burglary – second offense – a Class D felony; interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor; and driving while license revoked.

The Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation, Denver Police Department, Denver Ambulance Service, and Bremer County Dispatch also assisted with the apprehension of Smith.
