The search for the next Superintendent for the Charles City School District has hit a roadblock.
The School Board was slated to interview two candidates Tuesday to replace outgoing Superintendent Mike Fisher, but has canceled the session because there are no candidates to interview. One candidate who had an interview with another school district Monday night has bowed out of the running for the Charles City post, while a second candidate, who only wanted to be considered for the job as interim Superintendent, also removed himself from the finalist pool.
That comes after Roger Wilcox with Grundmeyer Leader Services, the firm leading the search for Fisher’s replacement, informed the board Sunday that one of their top four candidates took a job in Nebraska, another pulled out after deciding to interview with a different school district Tuesday, and an alternate candidate also elected to interview elsewhere.
School Board President Pat Rottinghaus says their most likely option right now is to find an interim Superintendent.
Rottinghaus says they hope to have an interim superintendent selected within the next month. She also noted that with almost four dozen school districts in Iowa looking to hire new superintendents in recent months, the competition for candidates has been stiff. Wilcox says they expected 17 or 18 applications for Charles City’s position, but received less than half that.
Fisher’s resignation is effective June 30th, when he leaves to become the Superintendent of schools in his hometown of Oskaloosa. Fisher has been with Charles City since 2018.
