Update: Person Killed in Three-Vehicle Northeast Iowa Crash Identified

One person was killed and four others injured in a three-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in northeast Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol says the wreck occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. Saturday south of Hazelton. A 2011 Chevy Silverado driven by 27-year-old Brian Goedken of Independence was southbound on Highway 150 when it crossed the centerline and collided head on with a northbound 2008 Pontiac SD driven by 31-year-old Ronald Landals of Perry, before crashing into a 2021 Ford Explorer driven by 26-year-old Mitchel Franck of Fairbank.

Landals was transported to Buchanan County Hospital in Independence where he died from injuries suffered in the crash. A passenger in his vehicle, 28-year-old Erin Bernardino of Des Moines, was taken to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Goedken and a passenger in his truck, 21-year-old Meadow Lynn of Independence were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Waterloo. Franck was taken to Buchanan County Hospital.

The wreck remains under investigation. The Fayette and Buchanan county sheriff’s departments, and Hazelton Fire and EMS also responded to the scene.
