Charles City School Board Approves Payment for Work at Former Middle School Building
Last month, the Charles City School Board voted to accept a bid of just over $1 million for improvements to the former middle school, in advance of The Learning Center’s (TLC) relocating its childcare operations into the 1970’s portion of the building.
As part of their North Grand Project agreement with TLC, the school district is responsible for the “envelope” of the former middle school, including the physical outside wall, HVAC and utility services. The district must also install a three-foot firewall to separate TLC from the 1930’s portion of the building which is being renovated into apartments.
At their regular meeting Monday night, the school board approved funding to pay for the upgrades and remodeling by authorizing the issuance of $1 million 76,000 in general obligation school capital loan notes. The move releases the money the district already has and will be financed through First Security Bank at a rate of 1.49%, which Matt Gillaspie with Piper Sandler, the district’s financial advisor, said is a competitive rate by today’s standards.
TLC and contractor, Woodruff Construction, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the North Grand renovations on January 31st, with completion expected by the end of May. TLC would then begin moving in during June and be serving children in their new center in early July.
