A bill that would have required Iowa public schools to install cameras in classrooms so parents could watch the livestream has been tabled in the Iowa House.
The measure lacked the votes to clear a House subcommittee and District 26 State Senator Waylon Brown ( R ) of Osage said he would not be on board for cameras in the classroom.

In addition to the cost of installing cameras in classrooms and upgrading livestreaming capacity in schools, opponents of the bill raised privacy concerns about showing students on camera. Representative Norlin Mommsen ( R ) of DeWitt, the bill’s sponsor, said his intent was to have the camera point to the front of the class.
Mommsen also noted that he was trying to provoke conversation after looking at remote learning caused by the pandemic, which also sparked more parental interest in what was happening at school. He added he was trying to take what we learned through that experience and expand upon it.
