Get out and about on Cabin Fever Weekend 2022
CHARLES CITY, IA – The holiday festivities have faded and the winter blues have set in for many, but fear not! You can shake off some of those winter doldrums in and around Charles City January 28-30 during the annual Cabin Fever Weekend organized by the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Designed to help get folks out and about again, Cabin Fever Weekend offers a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to choose from. It all begins on Friday, January 28th, with live acoustic guitar entertainment at Prologue Books & Wine at 213 North Main St. from 6-9 p.m. The Charles City Family YMCA will also be hosting roller skating that evening, also from 6-9 p.m. Enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants beforehand, or a nightcap afterwards at one of the bars in town.
On Saturday, January 29th, the fun begins at 9 a.m. with Elephant and Piggie characters greeting children at the Charles City Public Library parking lot until 11 a.m. at a drive-thru event. There will be cookies for all and a free book for each family. Then from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. there will be a free Kids Ice Fishing Derby at the R Campground pond at 1910 Clark St., sponsored by Rapids End Outfitters and R Campground. Youth up to age 13 invited, with bait, hot cocoa, and cookies to be provided, as well as door prizes.
At 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. Otto’s Oasis will host a Winter Blues Floral Class. Cost to participate is $40 and each class will be limited to the first 10 people to register. At 10:30 a.m. Prologue Book & Wine will host a Reading and Book Signing by children’s author Dakota Hruska at 213 North Main St.
A Cornhole Tournament will take place at the Charles City Elks Lodge starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, hosted by the Charles City Community Fund. Entry fee is $50 per team. Also from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. a PAWS open house will be held at its facility located at the end of Shaw Avenue, with animals available for adoption. That open house will continue Sunday, January 30th, from 1-3 p.m.
Starting a 1 p.m. Saturday, cross country skiing will be offered at the Tosanak Recreation Area (former Boy Scout camp) near Marble Rock, with $5 ski rentals. The Charles Theatre will host a matinee showing of the movie ENCANTO at 1:30 p.m. with standard admission fees.
Closing things out on Saturday, the IC Development Board will host a Janfest Beer & Wine Tasting for its annual fundraiser from 5-11 p.m. at Wrightz Auction Co. near Floyd. Finally, snow cover allowing, there will be sledding all weekend long at the Lion’s Field Park sledding hill, the entrance to which is located off of Gilbert Street across from Best Budget Inn.
