Charles City’s Luft a Two-Time State Wrestling Champ

Charles City’s Lilly Luft is a two-time state girls wrestling champion.

Luft scored her second state title with a 9-3 decision over Waverly-Shell Rock’s Macy Smith in the finals of the 130-pound weight class Saturday in Coralville, avenging a loss to Smith during the regular season. Luft’s individual crown, along with Ava Thompson’s third-place finish in the 285-pound division, helped the Comets finish in sixth place in the team standings.

Waverly-Shell Rock won the team championship, their fourth straight state title. The Go-Hawks had three wrestlers in the finals, but scored just one individual crown with Eva Diaz at 115. In addition to Smith’s runner-up finish at 130, WSR’s Annika Behrends was second at 140 pounds.

Osage had two individual state runners-up to help the Green Devils place third as a team. Osage’s Gable Hemann was second at 100 pounds and teammate Jalynn Goodale was second at 110. Decorah’’s Naomi Simon was the state champ at 170, helping the Vikings take fifth in the team standings.
