New Hampton a Healthy Hometown Finalist

New Hampton is one of eight finalists for the Healthy Hometown powered by Wellmark Community Award.

The Healthiest State Initiative has announced the finalists for the 2022 Healthiest State Annual Awards. Individuals, communities, K-12 schools, early care providers, out-of-school programs, health care providers and workplaces will be recognized for their efforts to improve the physical, social and emotional well-being of Iowans.

New Hampton Economic Development Assistant Director Megan Baltes says their application for the award is largely based on the Tribe Trail project, because of its importance to the community.

Baltes says the first two phases of the project, including the trail around Mikkelson Park, and out to Linn Avenue by Five Star Co-op. Phase three would go north from there to connect with the Industrial Park Trail near the Chickasaw Wellness Center. She adds that costs for the final phase are estimated at about $500,000 and fundraising continues.

Northeast Iowa Area Council of Governments (NIACOG)  based in Mason City is one of three finalists in the Healthiest State’s Small Workplace category. Winners will receive an unspecified monetary gift and will be announced during online ceremonies February 17th.

The 2022 Healthiest State Annual Awards are sponsored by Wellmark® Blue Cross® and Blue Shield®, HealthPartners UnityPoint Health, Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Iowa Medical Society.
