Traffic Lights on Highway 18 in Charles City Could Be Back in Operation Thursday

After being knocked out of service over a week ago, the traffic signal lights at the corner of Highway 18 and North Grand Avenue in Charles City should be back in operation Thursday.

The traffic lights were damaged on Tuesday, January 4th, when the boom hoist of an Iowa Dot maintenance truck was not lowered completely. It the boom struck the traffic lights then got tangled in power lines, snapping off four utility poles and knocking out power to customers for about four hours until power and services were restored by crews from MidAmerican Energy and Mediacom.

Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT’s Mason City District office says a contractor for the traffic light repairs was to receive the necessary parts for the project Wednesday and the signals should be working again sometime on Thursday. Since the mishap, a stop sign has been placed in the middle of the intersection to control traffic flow in all directions.

Damages caused by the incident were estimated at $50,000.
