Two 18-Year-Olds Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash in Northeast Iowa

Two 18-year-old males were killed and three other male passengers were seriously injured in a single-vehicle wreck Friday night in northeast Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol says the crash occurred shortly after 10 p.m. about five miles north of Ridgeway in Winneshiek County.  A 2000 Ford Explorer was northbound on County Road W-14 when the driver, Dalton Hemesath of Ridgeway, lost control of the vehicle near the intersection with Pole Line Road. The vehicle then went into the ditch and rolled at least three times before coming to rest on all four tires.

Killed in the crash were Hemesath and passenger, Karter Einck of Decorah. The three other passengers injured in the rollover were all from Decorah, with 17-year-old Emmitt Stemper taken by air ambulance to Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, while 17-year-old Brendan Hunter and 18-year-old David Kfeitzer were taken by to Howard County Regional Health Services in Cresco. Authorities say none of the five were wearing seatbelts.

Multiple EMS and fire and rescue agencies assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office.
