Charles City, New Hampton Represented at Good Sportsmanship Awards

Good sportsmanship between opposing north Iowa football players will be honored this weekend in St. Louis.

During the football game between Charles City and New Hampton September 3rd, a photo of the Comets’ Mario Hoefer helping the Chickasaws’ Carter Steinlage stretching after Steinlage’s leg cramped up on the field of play, taken by Wendy Luft, went viral.  Executive Producer Marc Schreiber says the moment is one of the great sportsmanship examples to be highlighted during the Musial Awards this Saturday.

The encounter between Hoefer and Steinlage already garnered the players a joint interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America 3.” Schreiber says they’ll get more national TV exposure after the Musial Awards are presented before a live audience this Saturday.

Musial Awards Executive Producer Marc Schreiber says selecting the best moments like that of Hoefer and Steinlage isn’t easy.

Schreiber says there’s also homework involved, which in this case, included talking with Comets’ Head Football Coach Brian Bjorklund.

The sportsmanship awards honor beloved Cardinals’ baseball legend and Hall of Famer Stan Musial. They are coordinated by the St. Louis Sports Commission which will cover air travel, hotel accommodations and ground transportation for Hoefer, Steinlage, and their parents.
