Roof Repairs to Former Charles City Middle School Move Forward

Roof repairs to the former middle school building in Charles City are set to move forward after a public hearing on the project was held during Monday’s regular school board meeting.

Last month, the School Board approved tentative plans, specs, form of contract and estimated total costs for two sections of North Grand East end roof repairs for about $325,000. The repairs are part of the school district’s agreement to ready the building to house new tenants.

The Learning Center (TLC) will remodel the 1970s portion of the building to almost double the number of kids they can accommodate with their childcare services. Developer Shawn Foutch is remodeling the 1930s section of the building into some 40 apartment units.

Gary Anderson with S.A. Architects of Mason City told the board last month  they’ll take bids for the roofing projects through November 11. He’s expected to make a recommendation to the board at their regular meeting November 29, with construction to begin in December and completion expected next spring.

There were no public comments for or against the North Grand East end roof project at Monday night’s public hearing, allowing the repairs to move forward.
