A fallen Iowa State Patrol trooper will be honored Friday in north Iowa.
Trooper Ted Benda died Wednesday from injuries he suffered the night of October 14th while en route to assisting the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office with a wanted suspect. Benda crashed his squad car on Highway 51, about six miles north of Postville. He was airlifted to a LaCrosse hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
To honor Benda, the Iowa State Patrol will conduct a procession in Benda’s honor on Friday, that includes a path through north Iowa. The procession will begin in Ankeny around 9 a.m. and go northbound on I-35 before turning east on Highway 9, ending in Waukon. The procession is expected to reach the Mason City area around 10 or 10:15 a.m.
In a Facebook post, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office says the procession should be in the Riceville area around 11:45 a.m. and Cresco around 12:10 pm. The public is encouraged to gather along Highway 9 to pay their respects to Trooper Benda and his family for his ultimate sacrifice.
Benda worked in the Iowa State Patrol’s District 8 office in Mason City before moving to District 10 in Oelwein.
