Depot Move in Charles City on Hold Thursday

The historic Milwaukee Railroad depot is “stuck at the station” today (10.07) in Charles City.

The 1912 building was not scheduled to make a move today and currently sits just north of the railroad tracks along 11th Avenue, where Thein Structural Moving of Clara City, Minnesota moved the depot to Wednesday from its original location near the corner of North Grand Avenue and 13th Avenue.

The American Passenger Train History Museum is coordinating the move, which included taking the depot through the former site of the White Farm tractor plant, which the museum’s Bob Moen says came with its own challenges.

Crews are expected to resume the move Friday morning which will take the depot across railroad tracks and down 11th Avenue where it will be parked next to its new location for the weekend.

The final phase of setting the building on its new foundation is scheduled to start Monday morning.

11th Avenue in Charles City will be closed Friday through Monday to facilitate the depot’s move.
