The return of the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office K-9 is still a couple of weeks away.
Duke suffered a training-related injury in July and underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL. Sheriff Marty Hemann says he has been cleared to return to duty, but Duke will wait until his handler, Deputy Stephen Johnson, can also return to duty.
Hemann says Duke is a valuable asset to the department’s law enforcement efforts.
Hemann says the sheriff’s office has had a K9 since the 90s when their first K9, Barry, joined the force. Then came Ringo, followed by Axe, who retired about a year ago, before Duke came on board.
Duke has been partnered with Johnson since 2017 when they were both with the City of Nashua.
