Foundation for New Depot Home in Charles City Taking Shape

The new home for the historic Milwaukee Railroad Depot in Charles City is taking shape.

Quality Concrete of Riceville this week began pouring the concrete foundation for the depot’s relocation about two blocks south of its current site on North Grand Avenue. Once the foundation is complete, it will take a few weeks for the concrete to dry and cure before the 1912 building can be moved by Thein Structural Moving of Clara, Minnesota.

That’s Bob Moen with the American Passenger Train History Museum, which is coordinating the depot’s relocation. He adds that once at it’s new site, cementing the depot in its new resting place can be completed.

The depot currently sit on steel beams about six feet off the ground while waiting for the move down the street, which was made possible through donations totaling over $350,000. Moen says they will next raise funds to renovate the depot.
