An investigation into an August Mason City shooting incident has led to the arrest of a second suspect.
On Monday, August 23rd, Mason City Police responded to a call of a shot being fired near the intersection of 4th Street Southeast and Illinois Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. The lone round fired was shot at a targeted vehicle, but also struck a second vehicle. The suspected shooter, later identified as 21-year-old Jacob Patterson of Mason City, fled the scene.
Patterson was apprehended later that day after surrendering to law enforcement without further incident. He was charged with intimidation with a weapon, a Class C felony.
Facing the same charge is 19-year-old Courtney Smith following her arrest for assisting Patterson. Authorities say Smith discarded the gun used by Patterson in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Police noted the shot that was fired did not impact anywhere near Mason City High School or Jefferson Elementary School. There were no injuries to the person in the vehicle targeted with the gunshot, nor to occupants of the second, uninvolved vehicle that was struck.
