Revenue generated through a one-cent local option sales tax in Charles City will continue to be used on streets and roads, if approved again by voters.
The tax is scheduled to expire after a 10-year-run on December 31st, 2022, but residents will be asked to extend it. City Administrator Steve Diers says funds from the tax can be used in almost any way a city wants to set it up, as long as it’s approved by voters.
Diers says city officials discussed other possible areas to use the funds including paying for raises for the police force and a new aquatic center, but the consensus was to stay on their current path.
As it stands right now, the earliest the tax can put back before voters will be a special election on March 1st, 2022.
