A Fayette County teen has died from injuries she suffered in a car-train collision this weekend.
The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office says the crash occurred Saturday at the railroad crossing just north of the intersection of South Canfield Road and Dubuque Road, east of Waterloo. A car driven by 18-year-old Emma Michels of Maynard entered the train crossing at the same time as the train passed through, striking the vehicle.
Michels and her 15-year-old sister Kate Michels, who was in the passenger seat, were both seriously hurt and taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo. Kate was later flown by air ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where she died Sunday.
Authorities say it appears the train’s whistle as well as the crossing’s red flashing lights and bell were activated and working at the time of the crash.
