Coalition Backs “Plan 3” in Floyd County Special Election

The Coalition for Better County Government is pushing for “Plan 3” in Tuesday’s special election to determine whether Floyd County changes how they elect members of the Board of Supervisors.

Currently, all three positions are elected at-large, but a second plan calls for “at-large, but with equal-population residence requirements for the members.”  Coalition President Gordon Boge says that Plan 3,“from single member equal-population districts in which the electors of each district shall select one member who must reside in that district,” is the best option.”

Boge says the current method of electing supervisors has been around long enough.

The Coalition first wanted the issue put before voters by petitioning the Board of Supervisors in June, but their petition with over 1,000 signatures was rejected by the supervisors on the basis the proper paperwork wasn’t submitted, making some 400 signatures ineligible. The Coalition then filed a court motion to force the supervisors to hold the special election. The Board would later vote 2-1 to avoid litigation and move forward with the special election.
