Heat Awareness Day Arrives, 90s Expected this Weekend

Thursday (06.03) is “Heat Awareness Day,” which may turn into a heat awareness weekend with high temperatures 90 or above under mostly sunny skies expected Friday through Sunday.

Floyd County Medical Center Certified Medical Assistant Heather Lewis says limit the amount of time you spend in the sun and when you can’t, cover up.

Lewis says every time a person gets a sunburn increases that person’s chances to get skin cancer. She advises if you have any concerns about how your skin looks, contact your family physician.

With the arrival of the warmest weather of the season, National Weather Service Meteorologist Jim Lee in            Johnston reminds you to take the heat seriously. If you’re outside this weekend, avoid over-exerting yourself physically, drink plenty of fluids and take some breaks in the shade.

Summer officially arrives on June 20th, but it will certainly feel like summer today (06.04) with a forecast high of 94 degrees.
