Highway 18 Towns to Receive Wellmark Health Grants

Three cities in north Iowa connected by Highway 18 have been selected to receive $100,000 health grants from the Wellmark Foundation.

The 2021 Large Matching Assets to Community Health (MATCH) grants have been awarded to 13 organizations in the state, contingent upon each grantee securing the required dollar-for-dollar matching funds by August 25th. The money benefits projects focused on helping individuals, families and communities achieve better health while encouraging physical activity and providing access to healthy food.

The City of West Union will construct a new recreational trail connecting West Union to Echo Valley State Park. The project is part of the city’s vision to become the “Gateway to Recreation” in Northeast Iowa.

The City of Algona will use the funding to redevelop Central Park including the reconstruction of the skate park and basketball courts, adding more green space and new sidewalks, plus increased lighting.

The City of Sheldon will utilize Wellmark’s matching grant to create a one-mile trail looping around Crossroads Park Lake and add one mile to the existing Sheldon Recreational Trail system.
