It was the “Collins and Connell” show early on day one of the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines.
Charles City Junior Ian Collins won the Class 3A state title in the long jump Thursday morning, clearing the bar at 6 feet 9 inches. He says it was satisfying to win after battling some ailments prior to state.
Collins’ younger sister, Freshman Keely Collins, finished second in the girls 3A high jump while Comets Senior Kiki Connell finished as the state runner-up in the 3A 3000 meters. She says she knew it would be a challenge to finish near the top.
Among the other notable area performances on day 1: Breanna Hackman of Nashua-Plainfield was state runner-up in the girls Class 1A shot put; Riley Witt of St. Ansgar placed 4th in boys 1A 3200 meters; and Carlee Rochford of New Hampton finished 4th in the girls 2A long jump. You can hear more from the Collins, Connell, Witt, Rochford and other area competitors on the State Track video interview section on our station website.
