The 13 people who died in the tornado that devastated Charles City on May 15th, 1968 are memorialized in a plaque at the new flag memorial in Central Park, which was dedicated earlier this month by the Charles City Lions Club.
During the ceremony, Lions Club President Dean Tjaden read names of those who died 53 years ago.
Other victims listed on the plaque are August Merten, Robert Stotts and Lela Wolff.
The Charles City tornado was one of two F5 tornadoes that hit central and eastern parts of Iowa about 45 minutes apart during that late afternoon. There were another five fatalities when a separate EF5 bore down on Fayette County with Oelwein and Maynard being hardest hit.
