Decorah Wins NEIC Track Titles

Local Athletes Put on Show at First Conference Meet in Two Years

Decorah (2021) It was a beautiful night in Decorah as boys and girls teams from the NEIC took to the track in the Northeast Iowa Conference meet.  Decorah took home the girls team championship in a very competitive race with 128 points. It was the Vikings of Decorah that ran away with the win on the boys side, scoring 179 points. The girls team race was as tight as it’s been in the last 15 years with three teams within eight points of each other going into the final two races. Decorah was able to pull away with the win on the backs of back to back wins in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. New Hampton girls finished second with 116 points on the night.

The New Hampton girls notched relay  wins in the sprint medley relay (1:55.62) and distance medley (4:29.77). They collected an individual championship from Hailey Pesek in the 400.  In one of the more exciting finishes of the night it was Kiki Connell of Charles City edging Emma Hoins of Waverly-Shell Rock by just 0.08 to win the girls 3000 meter run. Hoins lead the way for six laps when Collins passed for the lead on the seventh lap. Hoins repassed Connell for the lead at the start of the bell lap and extended to about an 8 meter lead. Connell was able to edge out Hoins at the line after a strong kick down the front stretch.  Connell’s official time was 10:18.95. She also took home the 800 meter crown (2:20.84), edging out Hoins once again in a back and forth race. Connell and Hoins went to battle one final time in the 1500, with Connell getting the individual event hat trick in a time of 4:45.14.

On the boys side, the Comets came away with individual victories in the high jump and long jump from Ian Collins (6-06) (23-01.5). Jeremiah Chapman took the 110 highs title (15.75). New Hampton took second in the 4×800 off of a stellar effort by seniors Joshua Holschlag, Austin Geerts, and Stephen Holschlag, as well as freshman Ethan Praska.

The track season continues in a week on Thursday night at district qualifying meets.
