City of Charles City attempting to find new housing director

The city of Charles City is down one housing director and is now on the search for a new one. City Administrator Steve Diers says now-former Housing Director of Charles City Heidi Nielsen is leaving.

Nielsen is leaving to work at the North Iowa Area Council of Governments.

With the coming job search, the city council is now questioning the future of the department. Nielsen alludes that the biggest question is whether the department wants to continue the housing choice voucher program or if they want to hand it over to the regional housing authority.

This housing program helps low income families, the elderly, and the disabled in finding housing in the private market. The voucher pays a portion of the rent and the tenant pays the other part.

Members of the CCPD mentioned that they hoped the city would retain the program as handing it over to the regional housing authority would take away the city’s ability to monitor for fraud.

Before leaving Nielsen and the housing board met and decided they would recommend that the city keep the program.

The city will continue their search for a housing director with the needed qualifications.

Overall, Diers says thank you to Nielsen for her time and hardwork in Charles City:
