Chickasaw County Conservation to hold free beginners bird watching workshop

For those hunting for a doable pandemic friendly hobby – here is your opportunity. Chickasaw County Conservation is putting on a ‘Building Better Birders Workshop’ at the Twin Ponds Nature Center on Oct. 24th. This workshop is focused on creating new bird watchers. Naturalist Matt Crayne says the workshop isn’t exclusively for beginners.

The program is led by Kelly McKay – the 2019 winner of the Ding Darling Environmental Education Award – a prestigious award given out by the Iowa Association of Naturalists each year. McKay will lead all 3 parts of the program:

  • Part 1 is a bird hike from 8 to 11 a.m.
  • Part 2 has McKay and the group identifying over 30 bird species from 12 to 2 p.m.
  • And lastly, part 3 is another bird hike from 2 to 4 p.m.

Binoculars and field guilds will be provided and the entire program is free of charge.

Crayne says birding is a hobby one can do for like – just life golf.
