‘Ride of Silence’ being held in memory of Ellen Bengtson tonight

28-year-old Ellen Bengtson went for a bike ride along Shadow Avenue north of 240th Street on August 2nd. She was riding southbound when she was hit by a Ford F-150 truck. Bengtson was air-lifted to MercyOne in Mason City and died later that night.

Bengtson was an avid cyclist who often rode in a local biking group called, ‘Bike Around Tuesday.’ An active member of the group, Mark Melrose says the group is holding a ‘Ride of Silence’ tonight in memory of Bengtson.

Those wanting to participate in the ride should meet at The Pub on the Cedar in Charles City at 6 p.m. tonight. The event is open to the public and the ride will be socially distanced.

The full ride will be short – only 5-7 miles and will include the trail systems and city roads. Melrose says riders won’t need to ride the entire route, but is encouraging riders to wear helmets.

Melrose says this incident has really hit ‘close to home’ and that he hopes the event will bring awareness to the idea of vehicles ‘sharing the road’.
