New Hampton schools to hold 2 graduation ceremonies: May 17th (virtual), June 28th (in-person)

Weeks ago, before a lot of other Iowa schools were sure, New Hampton schools promised their class of 2020 a graduation ceremony on May 17th. Many wondered if this was way too optimistic and/or dangerous – and how would it even operate?

Turns out, they will be having two separate ceremonies.

According to the New Hampton Tribune, they will have a virtual ceremony on May 17th; and then a traditional ceremony will be held on June 28th.

The school gave the students several options through a Google survey and the students chose to participate in a ‘hybrid plan of a video of each graduate crossing the stage followed by a procession through town’.

Principal Sarah Updegraff says on May 17th at 2:30 p.m. a video compilation will be released of all the seniors receiving their degrees.

Students need to sign up for an allotted 15-minute time slot and can bring up to 4 people to the taping of their diploma moment.

Then on June 28th, the ceremony may be on the football field if social distancing needs to be adhered to.

Updegraff says, “We realize this is difficult for everyone and these decisions have not been made lightly.”
