PRESS RELEASE

ChickFest, volunteer recognition events postponed

CHARLES CITY – Due to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic situation, temporary government mandates and the hardships placed on local businesses as a result, the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that it is indefinitely postponing the planned ChickFest retail promotion event on April 4th.

“ChickFest has become an annual spring tradition in Charles City and a major shopping event, so this was not a decision made lightly,” said Community Development Director Mark Wicks. “Recent events have given us little choice.”

He reported that after things calm down and the pandemic situation is resolved, the Chamber’s Retail Committee will get back together and decide how to best move forward.

“In the meantime, we want to be cognizant of what is best for our residents, our guests and our local businesses,” Wicks remarked. “We certainly want everyone to stay safe. As a community, we also need to try and help support our local businesses as best we can through this trying time. They support and invest back into Charles City … Charles City needs to do likewise for them.”

Another community event planned for April is also being postponed. Each year the Chamber and Community Revitalization co-organize a Community Volunteer Recognition Event, at which some of Charles City’s top volunteers are honored by the non-profit organizations they are involved with. This includes, among other awards, the Chamber Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Community Revitalization Volunteer of the Year, various school volunteers, “Caught in the Act” of doing unselfish deeds for others, and more. It is a chance for Charles City to say thank you to those who give of themselves for the good of their community.

The event had been scheduled for April 24th at the Senior Center, and it too has been postponed indefinitely. A make-up date will be announced at a later date.

Non-profits and residents can still submit nominations for volunteer honors to the Community Development Office at 401 North Main St., (641) 228-4234 or by emailing info@charlescitychamber.com. Nomination forms for Man of the Year, Woman of the Year and Caught in the Act are available online at charlescitychamber.com. There is no fee for nominations or for non-profit organizations taking part in the recognition event.
