The smaller the school – the smaller the funding. That is the general rule of thumb for public schools. This is why Mrs. Katherine Ortmayer of Nashua-Plainfield community schools was forced to look somewhere else to supply her students with a classroom set of ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck.
Ortmayer went on DonorsChoose.org and posted a campaign titled ‘Classroom Novel Set – of Mice and Men’. The goal was $706 to cover the 60 books, some sales tax, and labor fees.
Ortmayer wrote this on the official donor page:
“We often joke about my book hospital (the growing stack of books on my desk that need pages taped back into the book or the binding taped), but the lack of usable books has become anything but a joking matter. We currently do not have enough books to give students their own copy that isn’t almost destroyed.”
The ask only took 7 donors and was recently fully funded – 60 new books will be sitting on the shelves in Nashua.
