Halftime at Northern Iowa

Northern Iowa leads 7-3 in a battle of defenses.

It’s been a low scoring affair so far here in Cedar Falls as UNI leads 7-3 at halftime.  UNI drew first blood with a 3 yard interception return for a touchdown by Brawntae Wells.  The first quarter provided a mostly defensive struggle as UNI mustered a mere 43 yards of total offense. It was 14 better than San Diego’s 29 yards in the first quarter.  The second quarter provided a some exciting moments.  Omar Brown intercepted Johnston, Iowa native and San Diego quarterback Reid Sinnett.  However, the Panthers weren’t able to turn it into points and punted the ball back to the Toreros. Brown had another 2nd quarter interception wiped off the boards due to a roughing the passer penalty.  Later in the 2nd quarter San Diego’s Brandon Eickert attempted a 52 yard field goal that fell short. Will McElvain made the deepest dent in the San Diego defense when he found Isaiah Weston for on a deep post.  That set UNI up at the San Diego 18 yard line.  On the very next play McElvain lost the handle on the football and fumbled, which was recovered by San Diego at their own 12 yard line.  The Toreros marched the ball down to the UNI 15 yard line before Brandon Eickert kicked a 33 yard field goal to bring the score to 7-3  Both defenses have played well.  Northern Iowa has two interceptions, and a third that was wiped out by penalty.  San Diego has one fumble recovery.
