Rural farm families spur urban youth participation at fair

Charles City, Iowa – A livestock exhibitor’s dream is the handshake and the banner picture following the selection of the top animals in your class.

Landon Luft experienced the moment Friday during the Floyd County Beef Show as he won reserve county beef origin.

What makes Luft’s day unique is he’s part of the urban youth who have livestock at different Floyd County operations.

Luft and his sister, have steers at John Ruzicka’s where they house the animals.  The youth travel almost every day to take feed, wash and tend to their animals.

Luft says the opportunity is “amazing.”

This is just one example of rural families teaching new perspectives and opportunities for youth in the area, according to Ruzicka.

Ruzicka’s children, Jackson and Delaney, have taught their friends how to maintain their show stock.

He says the goal is for everyone to have lifelong memories.

He added all of the kids are fast learners and excited for the future. Ruzicka credited his kid’s for their work with all of the animals.
