Prichard would support special session to fix Medicaid issue

Charles City, Iowa – Iowa’s top Democrat says he’d support a special session bringing lawmakers together to fix the state’s ongoing Medicaid issue.

Todd Prichard, a democrat from Charles City, says the Iowa Department of Human Service’s attempted fix announced Wednesday won’t work.

Iowa DHS says it would pay an additional $386 million to two insurance companies who will provide Medicaid services for the 2020 fiscal year.

Prichard says privatizing the system was designed for cost savings, but the 8 percent increase is costing Iowa taxpayers.

The increase includes $115 million in additional state funding with the federal government footing the rest of the bill.

Prichard says throwing more money at the issue won’t help.

He added long term, he’s afraid they’ll “have to dump more money into it long term.”
