Common sense is key when lighting fireworks

New Hampton, Iowa – While many of us have lit of fireworks over the holidays, it’s not too late to catch up on firework safety as we prepare to celebrate America’s birthday.

Jason Rude is a certified pyrotechnician with 18 years of experience and says fireworks should always be respected.

Iowa legalized firework sales three years ago and each community has their own set of regulations for residents to follow.

Rude says adults should always light the explosives and never trust its fuse.

Fireworks should be anchored in the ground and spectators should stay at least 125 feet back.  Other regulations require more distance for other shows.

Rude adds don’t put your head over the firework , don’t relight any fuses and keep water available in case of fires.

Check with your local government on firework rules and regulations.
