The Score Sheet: New Hampton baseball, Charles City softball some of the hottest teams in state

Softball

The Charles City Softball team played five softball games over the weekend. The fourth-ranked Comets pulled together 58 runs and gave up only two.  The biggest win was against Don Bosco where they blanked the Dons 21-0.  The Comets are now 12-0 – the most wins in the state.

The Independence Mustangs outlasted New Hamtpon 6-5.  The Chickasaws are 5-2.

Nashua-Plainfield went 2-2 over the weekend.  They edged Dunkerton 7-5 and Denver 9-8 to bring their record to 3-4.

Rockford is 5-2 after splitting weekend contests.  In their first, the Warriors fell to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 18-17. Rockford rebounded with an 11-0 win over Lake Mills.

North Butler’s only blemish in three games over the weekend was to Charles City.  A 6-0 setback was then topped by wins over Iowa Falls-Alden and Saint Ansgar.  The Bearcats are 5-2.

A 2-2 performance by the Osage Green Devils puts their record at 4-6.  They defeated Riverside and Oelwein over the weekend.

Three more wins for the Clarksville Indians improved their record to 7-0 after plating 35 runs in three games over the weekend.

Four games, three wins for the Sumner-Frederiskburg Cougars.  The only loss came to Edgewood-Colesburg 8-0.  Sumner-Fred is 6-2.

North Fayette Valley went .500 over the weekend.  With wins over Riverside and Maquoketa Valley, the Tigerhawks are 4-3.

Baseball

Charles City’s four-game winning streak came to its end Friday night splitting a double header with Oelwein.  Erik Hoefer reports.

 

A team you don’t want to meet right now is the New Hampton Chickasaws. The bats are flying to an extent where they plated 60 runs in the last four games!  They’re 9-0.  Their weekend included wins over Crestood and North Fayette.

Nashua-Plainfield grabbed a 3-2 win over North Union Friday.  The Huskies are 3-2.

Rockford’s 3-3 after losing both weekend games to North Butler and Wapsie Valley.

As for the North Butler Bearcats, they’re 5-2 after their lone 5-2 win over Rockford.

Osage only competed once over the weekend.  They lost to top-rated Newman Catholic 6-0.  The Green Devils are 4-2.

Clarksville is 1-4 after a 9-5 loss to North Tama.

Sumner-Frederiskburg is 2-5 after splitting Friday’s double header to Aplington-Parkersburg.  The Cougars won game one 3-1 but surrendered game two 7-6.

South Winneshiek sits at 6-3 after splitting weekend games.  After losing to Mason City 13-3, the Warriors rebounded by doubling up Crestwood 14-7.

North Fayette’s only game came against the red-hot hitting New Hampton Chickasaws.  The Tigerhawks lost 11-4.
