The 2019 State Track and Field Meets begin today at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Karl Wooldrige will provide hourly updates at the bottom of each hour. They’ll begin at 9:30 today, tomorrow and Saturday.
The Drake softball team hopes experience is a plus as they get set to play Georgia Friday night in an NCAA Regional in Minneapolis. The Bulldogs are 42-14 a made it to the championship round of a regional in Eugene, Oregon a year ago before being eliminated by top ranked Oregon. Coach Rich Calvert also put together a challenging nonconference slate that saw the Bulldogs play a dozen games against rated foes.
Drake dominated the Missouri Valley Conference race but Calvert says they did face some adversity in recent weeks.
Drake senior pitcher Nicole Newman is second in the country in earned run average. She will face a deep Georgia lineup that includes shortstop Alyssa DiCarlo, who ranks seventh in the nation in home runs with 21.
Newman is part of a senior class that has led Drake to back to back trips to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Cornell plays in an NCAA Division III baseball regional for the first time on Friday when the Rams play host Washington University in St Louis. Cornell claimed its first Midwest Conference Tournament title by winning four straight elimination games.
That’s Cornell coach Seth Wing who felt it was a matter of when and not if the Rams could get to a regional.
The Rams took the unusual route of losing it’s opener in the tournament before roaring back through the loser’s bracket.
Wings says the Rams are confident heading into the regional.
American Rivers Conference regular season champion Coe plays Aurora of Illinois in the other first round game.
