Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller has no idea how his players have reacted to the Hawkeyes’ new national ranking. It is exam week on campus and finding practice time has been a challenge.
The Hawkeyes are 24th in the latest D1Baseball.com poll and return to Big Ten action beginning Friday night by hosting Michigan State.
Heller says there is no negatives about being nationally ranked.
Drake softball coach Rich Calvert says even if the Bulldogs don’t win the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament they will be headed to an NCAA regional.
The Bulldogs closed the regular season with a 40-14 record and are currently 23rd in the latest college softball RPI and much of the reason is a tough early season schedule that included games against 12 ranked foes.
Calvert says the tough early slate also is one of the reasons Drake posted a 24-2 Valley regular season record.
Calvert says the RPI ranking makes the Bulldogs a lock for the tournament.
Calvert says the selection committee usually follows the RPI rankings.
As the top seed in the field the Bulldogs have a bye into Friday morning’s semifinals in Peoria. Northern Iowa is the third seed in the field. The Panthers open in the quarterfinal round on Thursday night.
