Council takes first step in allowing students to be apart of Charles City history

Youth will now be able to serve on the Historic Preservation Commission

Charles City, Iowa – Area youth will have opportunities to be involved in understanding and protecting the history in and around Charles City by becoming part of the Historic Preservation Commission.

The council moved for the first reading of an ordinance Monday night allowing students in each grade who live in the Charles City School District to become non-voting members.

Mayor Dean Andrews says this is a learning experience for youth.

Students would be appointed to one-year terms and be allowed to reapply each year.  Andrews added the idea came from students who helped get the Riverside Cemetery project started.

Council member Michael Hammond says this models what other cities in Iowa and across the country are doing.

There will be two more readings before the ordinance change is adopted.
