Latest crop report indicates dryer conditions, but still slow spring fieldwork

Ames, Iowa – Information released Tuesday in the USDA’s weekly crop progress report says despite dryer temperatures last week, spotty rain showers put a damper on field work.

There was only 4.1 suitable days of fieldwork, which is two more days than the week before.

The report says 48 percent of the oat crop is planted, six days ahead of last year but five days behind the five year average.

Forty-four percent of pastures across the state are good and 36 percent are in fair condition, but many are expected to green up with warmer temperatures in the forecast.
