Iowa bill could have major structural and financial impact on county bridges

Charles City, Iowa – Chickasaw and Floyd Counties oppose a bill from the Iowa Senate allowing loads up to 130,000 pounds for forestry industry haulers on non primary highways throughout Iowa.

County Engineer Dusty Rolando says the bill does not require previous approval of permits through his office.

The legal weight limit is 80,000 pounds.

The county may have to put up signs up at the nearest intersection and bridge warning drivers the bridge isn’t structurally safe for loads over the legal limit.

Rolando added analyzing bridges and putting up signs would be a massive cost.

Both county’s supervisors approved and signed the resolution.  Rolando send it to Representative Todd Prichard, Waylon Brown and the Governor’s office.
