New Hampton extends school days to prevent longer school year

New Hampton, Iowa – School administration are crunching the numbers on how to best get students out earlier since snow days have pushed the school year into June.

The New Hampton School Board met in session Monday night in the high school library.

The board heard a recommendation from superintendent Jay Jurrens to increase the school days by 30 minutes, with 15 minutes being added to the beginning of the school day and 15 minutes being tacked onto the end of the day to help make up some of the days of school missed due to the weather.

The addition of minutes will, weather permitting, allow students to be dismissed for the summer on Wednesday, May 29 . The school board voted unanimously to accept Jurrens’s recommendation. The longer school days will begin on Tuesday, March 12.

The board also accepted the resignations of John Maas as a middle school basketball coach and Nick Hemann as a teacher and coach in the district.
