Sumner, Iowa – Emergency response personnel from Bremer County and Sumner made a heroic rescue Monday afternoon.
Bremer County Emergency Manager Kip Ladage says the call came in Monday afternoon around 3.
The man has been identified as Ron Tegtmeier who lives by Sumner, according to Ladage.
After bystanders’ efforts failed, the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department deployed a cofferdam.
He says cofferdams are imperatives to rescue missions because it prevents an individual from sinking farther into the corn.
Ladage tells North Iowa News the rescue took three hours and Tegtmeier walked away with no injuries.
He added most of these situations don’t have happy endings like this one.
Ladage thanks area co-ops for donating cofferdams to emergency personnel groups. Without those, they make grain bin rescues very difficult.
