The Score Sheet: Stellar free throw shooting lifts Comets over Go-Hawks; other area scores

Charles City 71, Waverly-Shell Rock 55

A perfect free throw percentage in the fourth quarter helped power the Charles City Comets past the Waver-Shell Rock Go-Hawks 71-55. The Comets went 18 for 18 at the stripe.

Junior Tait Arndt says free throw shooting has been a point of emphasis with his team.

As a 62 percent free throw shooter, Arndt hit both of his in the fourth quarter.  He finished with 10 points who did it on defense and offense.

Arndt says the team’s goal is simple as they close out 2019.

Jackson Molstead posted 35 points in the win.  Charles City is 12-6 and will travel to Decorah on Friday.

Other area scores:

The now 17-2 Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks dropped the Comet girls 59-29.  Charles City is 0-18.

The MFL-Mar-Mac girls squeaked by the North Fayette Valley Tiger-Hawks 46-45.  North Fayette is 10-10.

Dike-New Hartford hammered the 10-9 Sumer-Fredricksburg Cougar boys 73-40 last night.

Despite seven North Fayette Valley players scoring, they couldn’t muster enough offense as they lost 57-50 to MFL-Mar-Mac.  The Tiger-Hawk boys are 13-6.

Iowa forward Joe Weiskamp  has been named the Big Ten freshman of the week twice in the last three weeks but is contributing more than his 11 and a half points and five rebounds per game. The Muscatine native is one of Iowa’s best defenders and is second on the team in steals with 23.

Defense is normally an area where freshman struggle but Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says Weiskamp has excelled at that end of the court.

McCaffery says Weiskamp has the tools to be a special defender.

The 20th ranked Hawkeyes visit Indiana on Thursday.
