UPDATED: Hemann releases statement

Thursday, 9:13 a.m.

New Hampton, Iowa – Nick Hemann has released a statement regarding his departure from the wrestling program.

He tells North Iowa news he’s accepted responsibility for what happened after he thought what he was doing wasn’t communicated properly.

“I will tell you this, nobody cared about the New Hampton wrestling program and those wrestlers more than myself,” says Hemann.

He’s appreciative of the individuals who’ve reached out to him.

Wednesday, 9 p.m.

New Hampton, Iowa – Nick Hemann has been let go as the head wrestling coach of New Hampton/Turkey Valley effective immediately.

The decision came Wednesday afternoon and school officials say the team will be led by assistant coaches Matt Paulus and Andy Geerts.

The two will serve as co-head coaches with assistance from volunteer coaches.

“The district is confident these coaches will provide leadership and great experience for our student athletes for the remainder of the season,” says Superintendent Jay Jurrens.

Hemann was in his 11th year with the Chickasaws.  He led the program to back-to-back state dual championships and is the two-time runner up in the traditional tournament. New Hampton/Turkey Valley is 22-11 and ranked third in Class 2A.

Jurrens declined to comment further on the matter and Hemann could not be reached Wednesday evening.
