The Score Sheet: Molstead’s heroics and New Hampton’s win set up another rivalry classic

New Hampton 63, Oelwein 58

New Hampton snapped a two-game skid after edging Oelwein 63-58 on Friday night.  Drake Wemark led the Chickasaws with 21 and Tristan Sweizter collected 13.  New Hampton is 5-6 and host Charles City tomorrow night.

Charles City 78, Waukon 76

The cardiac Comets struck again Friday night ousting Waukon 78-76.


Jackson Molstead scored two of his team-high 24 points on Charles City’s final possession of the game.  The go-ahead bucket came with 1.7 on the clock.  The Comets surrendered their first lead of the game with four minutes to go and then starred at an eight-point hole with two minutes to go.

But a pair of steals and layups by from JJ Ritter who collected a season-high 19, and lay in from Marcus Cranshaw powered the Comets back into the game.

Tait Arndt finished with 13 and Cranshaw added 11.  The Comets are 5-3, winners of four straight and will play New Hampton tomorrow.

In girls basketball action:

New Hampotn 54, Oelwein 28

New Hampton has won two straight after beating Oelwein 54-28.  Alexa Wemark netted a game-high 18 points and Hope McDonald added 11.  New Hampton is 7-4 and hosts Charles City tomorrow.

Waukon 61, Charles City 22

Eight-ranked Waukon blew out Charles City 61-22.  Charles City falls to 0-9 and travels to Iowa Falls-Alden as the Comets start a five game-road slate.

West Fork 60, Nashua-Plainfield 16

West Fork blew out Nashua-Plainfield 60-16.

Sumner-Fredricksburg 59, Jesup 40

Sumner-Fredricksburg has picked up six straight to improve to 8-3 after a 59-40 win at Jesup on Friday.  Cassidy Pagel scored 20 and Ivy Hirsch collected 18.

Turkey Valley 57, Clayton Ridge 33

Turkey Valley improved to 5-6 with a 57-33 dispatching of Clayton Ridge on Friday.  Jaycie Byrne scored 13 to lead the Trojans.

Other scores:

South Winneshiek is 5-5 after a 35-33 loss to Central Elkader.

North Fayette Valley lost ot MFL-Mar-Mac 64-27.  The Tiger-Hawks are 5-6.

Boys basketball:

West Fork 66, Nashua-Plainfield 57

Nashua-Plainfield fell to 5-5 after a 66-57 setback to West Fork on Friday.  Austin Bienemann and Isaac Chambers combined for 42 of the 66 Husky points.

Jesup, 60, Sumner-Fredricksburg 39

Sumner-Fredricksburg is 5-5 after losing 60-39 to Jesup on Friday.  James Stimson led the Cougars with 14.

Turkey Valley 46, Clayton Ridge 23

Turkey Valley is 8-3 after picking up a pair of weekend wins. The first was a 46-23 dispatching of Clayton Ridge and then a 57-53 win over Jesup.

North Fayette Valley 59, MFL-Mar-Mac 58

North Fayette Valley has ran their winning streak to eight after a 59-58 thriller over MFL-Mar-Mac.  Kole Johson collected 20 points for the Tiger-Hawks.  North Fayette Valley is 9-1.

Charles City Bowling:

The Charles City bowlers swept Decorah on Friday.  The boys shot their first 3000 series of the year.  Cael Bohlen bowled a 402.  The Lady Comets bowled a 2805 with Madison Ross coming close to a school record, a 523 series.

Comet Wrestlers:

The Charles City  Comet wrestlers stole fifth place at the Forest City tournament on Saturday.  Dylan Koresh took second.

#25 Iowa 93, #24 Nebraska 84

Iowa pulled away in the second half for its first Big Ten victory.


Gary Dolphin with the call on the Hawkeye Network. Jordan Bohannon scored 22 of his game high 25 points in the second half as Iowa topped 24th ranked Nebraska 93-84.


Iowa State 77, #5 Kansas 60

Now 12-2 Iowa State upset #5 Kansas 77-60 on Saturday.  Marial Shayok led ISU with 24 points.
