Today marks the beginning of the NCAA Wrestling Championships and nine Iowa Hawkeye grapplers will begin their quest for a National Title. Iowa is looking to bounce back from a fourth place finish at the Big Ten Championships which was their worst finish at that tournament in 13 years. The Hawkeyes will have a young representation at this year’s tournament as two-thirds of their qualifiers are at the sophomore level or younger. Leading the Iowa squad though is senior Brandon Sorenson who is the team’s top-ranked competitor as he is number two at 149 pounds. Spencer Lee, a freshman for the Hawkeyes, is ranked fourth at 125 pounds. The other seven qualifiers are Vince Turk at 141 pounds, Michael Kemerer at 157, Alex Marinelli at 165 who is seeded fifth, Joey Gunther at 174, Mitch Bowman at 184, 14-seed Cash Wilcke at 197 and fifth seed Sam Stoll at 285.
The UNI Panther Wrestling Team will have six in the NCAA National Tournament field. Those six wrestlers include Jay Schwarm at 125 pounds, Josh Alber at 141, Max Thomsen at 149, Taylor Lujan at 174, Drew Foster at 184 and Jacob Holschlag at 197.
The Iowa State Cyclones will have one representative at the National Championships. Jarrett Degan will wrestle at the 149 pound weight class for the Cyclones.
The Tournament begins this morning at 11am in Cleveland and will continue until the Finals matches which will begin at 7pm on ESPN 2.
